THE CLEANUP NOTEBOOK
Turn a crowded space into a manageable project.
Create four sorting zones
Choose separate places for keep, donate, recycle, and dispose items. Start with visible floor space instead of emptying every shelf at once. Label items that must not be discarded and set personal records aside for secure handling.
Separate hazardous products first
Garages often contain automotive fluids, paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, batteries, and propane. These should not go in a general dumpster. Keep original containers closed and consult local hazardous waste guidance.
Work safely through bulky items
Use help for heavy furniture or equipment and check inside cabinets before moving them. Maintain a clear route from the garage to the container. Do not lift beyond your ability or leave sharp items exposed along the route.
Finish with a system that lasts
Group the retained items by use and keep access paths open. Confirm the dumpster load follows your agreement before scheduling pickup. Donate or recycle suitable items through appropriate local channels rather than automatically discarding them.
This guide is general information. Accepted materials, weight limits, permits, and rental terms must be checked for your particular project and location.
